About us
The Prophet Elijah Hospice Foundation, founded in 2009 by Dr. Paweł Grabowski, has for many years provided support to terminally ill people in rural areas. Its mission is to ensure dignified care for patients at the end of life, especially in regions with limited access to medical services. The patron of the hospice is Saint Elijah, who in the Christian tradition is invoked as an intercessor in spiritual struggle, especially against doubt.
Our mission
Our mission is to provide hospice care in rural areas. We reach people forgotten by the world, and sometimes by family and institutions. To ensure the dignity of older people in the final stages of their lives and out of respect for life, we operate a home hospice and inpatient hospice in rural areas.
Inpatient hospice
Thanks to the support of donors and a tremendous organisational effort, the Care, Hospice and Education Centre was opened in 2022 and welcomed its first patients. The in-patient hospice provides round-the-clock medical care as well as support for patients and their families. The facility was designed to create a homelike atmosphere, allowing patients to feel comfortable and safe.
Home hospice
The Foundation runs a home hospice in eastern Podlasie. The purpose of this form of care is to enable patients to remain in their own environment, surrounded by their loved ones, while receiving professional medical care. The home hospice team consists of doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, psychologists and caregivers for the elderly, who provide comprehensive support.
Education
The Foundation is actively involved in educational activities aimed at raising public awareness of issues related to palliative care and dying with dignity. It organises training for medical staff and volunteers, as well as information campaigns promoting the idea of hospice care. The Prophet Elijah Hospice also plays an important role in the local community, engaging in various activities that support the residents of the region.
To give what is really needed
The Prophet Elijah Hospice Foundation initiated the award-winning partnership project “To Give What Is Really Needed”, recognised by the European Commission under the EaSI programme as one of seven leading social innovations in Europe and the only finalist from Poland in its category. Launched in 2020 with partners including the Podlaskie Voivodeship, ROPS in Białystok, IRWiR PAN and OWOP, the project developed and tested a new model of long-term home care for dependent, chronically and terminally ill people in rural areas. Its key idea was to build local support networks — from neighbours and informal groups to public institutions and NGOs — coordinated by a new role: the Dependent Care Coordinator. The model was designed to respond flexibly to real health and social needs, support family caregivers and offer solutions that could be replicated in other rural regions of Poland and Europe.
